Vannett wins battle of future Buckeyes
Last Saturday, two future Buckeyes went head-to-head on the gridiron.
Class of 2011 tight end Nick Vannett and his Westerville Central teammates hosted 2012 linebacker Josh Perry and the Olentangy Braves. Olentangy won the game, 27-20, eliminating Central from the playoffs picture, but Vannett won the individual battle.
"I had a hell of a game playing against Josh Perry's team," Vannett said. "I had nine catches for 105 yards and a touchdown and a few tackles on defense."
The game was in question until the closing minute when Olentangy drove the length of the field for the game-winning score.
Vannett said playing against a future teammate helped him to raise his level of play.
"It was pretty cool," Vannett said. "Me and Josh have gotten to know each other by going to the games and it was more of us wanting to player harder against each other. It was good competition."
During the game Vannett had a few blocking assignments against Perry. While Vannett claimed victory in those head-to-head match-ups he's not sure Perry would fully agree.
"They sent him on a lot of blitzes but I did block him a few times," he said. "He might stand for himself on it but I believe I got him a few times."
Vannett is disappointed in his team's 2-6 record, but he's done all he can to contribute to the team. On the year he has 37 receptions and four touchdowns and four sacks on defense.
He's hoping a strong performance during his senior season will lead to an invite to the US Army All-American Bowl.
"As a team we aren't doing so hot but individually I don't think I could ask for a better season than what I'm having," he said. "I've tried to live up to the hype but it would really be special if I got into the Army bowl."
If things don't work out with the Army bowl, Vannett already has been invited to participate in the Offense-Defense All-American Game in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Vannett's last visit to Ohio State was for the Buckeyes 38-10 win over Indiana on Oct. 9. He plans to attend the rest of the home games.
